Personality:
-Plays best with people or another dog, isn’t much for solo play
-Enjoys bones the most, crinkle toys and ones he can shake, and throw are a close second.
-Will play fetch, but doesn’t always bring it back
-Loves chest scratches the most!
-Being a Husky, he gets bored easily and he will tell you – his Great Pyrenees side means the mild pacing doesn’t last long and he will eventually lay down or play with a toy.
-Isn’t interested at all of my 14-year-old cat, sniffs him and then walks away uninterested
Training:
-Doing well in his training, picks commands up faster with another dog he can see getting a treat and suddenly his sense of hearing returns.
-Anything beef flavored – those are his favorite treats.
-Sits well, listens to “no” – will give you a gruff and whine here and there but that’s the Husky in him.
-He knows he cannot go through entrances first; he listens when told to wait and will walk in behind me. This is important as he is a big boy, don’t want him plowing people over in doorways.
-Snapping fingers works to get his attention, to recall him so he is back on track.
-His recall is improving but is always on a leash outside of the yard.
Other:
-Walks/Runs: Uses both prong collar and harness, his energy level dictates what is used. Doesn’t bark or pull when seeing people or other dogs.
-Kenneling: During the day when I’m at work, does not destroy the bed or toys placed in the kennel with him, will cry, Husky whimper & bark for a couple minutes but will lay down and wait for you to come home.
-Potty Training: Did not need any training when I picked him up, has various ways of communicating needs, mostly with whimpers and pawing at the door.
-Bedtime: I shut my bedroom door at night, he has a couple toys or bones, but his typical routine is cuddle and demand chest scratches followed up finding a good spot on the floor (isn’t much of a bed or couch sleeper). He’s never had an accident at night.
-Mealtime: Gets 4 cups of food a day using an elevated bowl. He is not food aggressive, I can put my hand in the bowl, take the food away, pet him, and he eats next to my dog (sometimes they swap food…multiple times a meal), and he does not react. I always make him sit before putting the bowl down.
-Bathing: He was a little nervous about the new experience but coped very well with some gentle massage & calm reminders that he’s a good boy & he’s okay.
-Kids: Olaf warms up to people quickly, has been around kids of all ages, enjoys anyone that will play with him or take him for walks.
-During the day he follows me around the house; he’s simply happy to be involved in whatever activity you are doing. If it’s time to relax on the couch, he will either play with my dog, chew on a bone or come to the couch for chest scratches and a short snuggle session, but when he’s ready to fall asleep, to the floor he goes. When there is another dog in the house, he will play & play until the other dog stops or they’ve tired each other out. He listens well when told to stop if everyone is going a little hard and crazy.
-On the days I work, he always gets a good long walk in on the greenway and he’s still a couch potato if I’m exhausted – but will jump up to be ready for anything at any time.
-While mowing the lawn, he isn’t afraid of the mower, he just hangs out on the deck, sun-bathing or chewing on a bone.
-I can touch all his paws, pull ticks and scabs off him without any problems. He is a very good dog; being calm, patient, giving positive reinforcement and loving reassurance is all he needs, and he will be the most loyal companion you have ever had.
